Best Time to Prune Trees & Shrubs in the Hudson Valley
Ornamental
gardening has an important place in the chaotic and polluted life of man, that
is why flower garden, garden, home garden and other types of gardens have
become a necessity at present. To make an ornamental garden beautiful,
attractive and charming, various horticultural activities like - Pruning,
Training, Staking, Hoeing and Weeding, Irrigation and Nutrition are required to
be done from time to time. Through these activities, along with the beauty of
the garden, excellent quality production can also be done. For this, the
following activities are adopted in the garden as per the requirement of the
plants.
WHEN IS THE BEST TIME OF YEAR TO PRUNE TREE?
Pruning : - Tree Pruning is a special work of the garden by which the growth of ornamental plants is controlled and made attractive. In ornamental gardening, this activity can be defined as "Cutting the excess parts of the plants such as roots, stems, branches, leaves, flowers etc. with the objective that the remaining parts may grow as desired." This activity is called Trimming.
Objectives of Tree Pruning:-
(1) To control the size of the plants and to give them the desired shape, cutting all those parts which spoil their shape.
(2) Cutting
the thin, weak and dense branches of the plants so that the plants grow rapidly
and the lower parts can get light and air properly.
(3) Changing
the growth pattern of flowering plants to get maximum flowers of large size and
good qualities.
(4) Cutting
the diseased and insect-infested dry branches to give attractive and beautiful
appearance to the plants.
(5) Cutting the old branches or its front part to renew the plants so that the plant can develop vigour.
When Is The Ideal Time To Prune A Tree
Rules of Tree Pruning:-
(2) The cut
should be very clean so that the wound does not take much time to heal.
(3) The cut
should be correct and slightly slanted.
(4) Big
branches or main branches should be cut from their base without leaving the
stubble.
(5) After
cutting, Bordeaux mixture paste or fungicide should be applied on the cut
place.
Methods of Tree Pruning :-
Generally there are two methods of Pruning :-
(1)
Pruning:- Ornamental plants are usually given a bushy shape by pruning method.
In this method, the last part of the branch is cut near a bud, due to which the
top part of the plant is destroyed and the lateral branches start developing.
Whether the front part is cut depends on the species of the plant. In the
garden, this type of pruning is usually done in the flood.
(2) Rarefaction:- The process of removing some branches and canopy from the root is
called thinning. This process encourages longer growth of the terminal buds
remaining on the plant. By the process of thinning, the lateral branches
decrease and the plant starts spreading. Due to which the plant does not become
dense but starts becoming larger. This process is often used in ornamental
trees.
In
ornamental gardening, the roots of the plants planted in pots are also pruned
to control their growth. This
is often done to keep the plants dwarf.
Best Time of Pruning:- The time of pruning depends on the age, growth and flowering time of
the plants. Diseased, dry and insect-infested branches should be cut off as
soon as they are visible. Irregularly growing branches should also be removed
because they affect the shape of the plant. Deciduous plants are pruned from
December to March when the plant is in dormant state. Evergreen plants can be
pruned in both June-July and February-March. Plants that flower should be
pruned after flowering. For example - Ixora, Jasminum etc. Bushy plants are
pruned several times a year as per the need and in a normal manner based on the
purpose for which they were planted. For example - a tree planted on the
roadside is pruned only after five years.
(2) Training:- Just like pruning, the growth of plants is controlled in various ways through training. The method which controls the direction, size and shape of the growth of plants is called training. The place of spread of the plant is also determined through this process. Giving a certain shape to the plants can be done by supporting them, letting them grow naturally and by twisting or turning them as per the need. Like - Topiary, and Bonsai art.
Objectives
of Training:-
(1) To allow
air and sunlight to reach every part of the plant.
(2) To
protect the plant from strong sunlight or wind.
(3) To
control the growth of the plant and give it shape.
(4) To
promote the parts with more flowering on the branches of the plants.
(5) To
provide a special shape and structure to the plants so that the branches come
out from the right place and there is more flowering.
Rules of Tree Pruning :-
(1) Most ornamental
trees are trained using single stem method in which training is done from a low
height.
(2) Branches
should have almost equal distance from the stem.
(3) Some
trees first grow in length for some time, after which branches grow in them.
The apical bud of such plants is broken, so that lateral branches are
encouraged.
(4) If two
branches are growing parallel to each other, above and below, then the weak and
bent branch should be removed. If three branches are growing parallel to each
other, then the middle branch should be removed.
Methods of Tree Pruning :-
There are
three main methods of training. These methods are used in ornamental trees and
plants according to their species growth nature and the need of the garden.
(A) Central
Leader System:- In this, the main stem of the plant is allowed to grow
straight, due to which the size of the plant increases in height.
(B) Open
Centre System :- In this the main stem is bounded and cut when it is 40 to 50
cm long. After this 4 to 5 branches are trained at a sufficient distance on the
sides. This makes the shape of the plant like a pot or cup and it remains open
in the middle.
(C) Modified
Central Leader :- In this both the above mentioned methods of training are used
together. In this method the top part of the main stem is cut after it grows
150 cm from the ground and after that the lateral branches are allowed to grow
around the stem. With this method the structure of the plant becomes strong and
the plant looks attractive.

(3) Staking:- In ornamental gardening, seasonal flowers, climbing plants and other special plants are supported to make them attractive and enhance their beauty. These plants perform at their best after getting support, due to which attractive flowers bloom on them. For example - chrysanthemum, marigold, creeper roses, jasmine, gladiolus and winter flowering plants. In some varieties of dahlia and chrysanthemum, the flowers are of large size, due to which the plant is unable to bear their weight and the plants fall due to light wind. In such a situation, it becomes necessary to support these plants. **
