Selection of place and its preparation -
Generally, greenery
(lawn) can be made in any type of land, but the place should be selected very
carefully and wisely. For this, select such a place where the shadow of the
bungalow falls as little as possible and the water of the house does not
collect, because collecting water stops the growth of grass and various types
of diseases and insects attack.
In the month of May-June, dig 45 to 60 cm deep at the
place designated for greenery (lawn). After digging, leave the soil open for
two weeks so that the soil is completely heated by the rays of the sun. Also,
the soil pests and disease spreading fungi die. Digging is done three times and
at the time of each digging, break the clods and make them fine and remove the
roots of the weeds. Apart from this, pebbles and stones should also be removed.
Later, level the land with the help of a light garden roller. After leveling,
water should be given so that the leveling is visible and weeds also grow, they
should be destroyed.
If the soil is
acidic, then its acidity can be reduced by adding 200-500 grams of gypsum per
square meter.
Manure and
Fertilizer - For good growth of grass, it is absolutely necessary to add
sufficient quantity of cow dung manure and fertilizer to the soil. Their proper
quantity depends on the land chosen for greenery, the species of grass and the
means of irrigation. Usually 500 quintals of cow dung manure is mixed in the
soil after digging the soil at the rate of per hectare. For good growth of
grass, 500 to 700 kg of single super phosphate should be mixed in the soil at
the rate of per hectare to a depth of 8 to 12 cm. Lime should not be added to
the soil until its pH value is less than 5.5, because most of the grasses grow
well in slightly acidic soil.
Selection of grass - Grass has an important role in
creating greenery (lawn). Hence, grass should be selected with great care and
understanding.
According to horticulturists, the following qualities are essential in green grass -

grass should have. It is the most popular grass of India. It takes about 40
days to establish itself and cover the entire area. This grass is very suitable
for Indian plains.
(2) Zoysia japanica - It is also called "Japan or Korean grass". This grass is very soft
but its growth is slow. This grass can be grown successfully in places where
Doob grass does not give good results. This grass can be grown easily even in
weak and sandy soil.
(3) Stenopharynx
secundatum - It is also called "Goose grass". This grass is very
hardy. It is a suitable grass for moist areas. This grass is also capable of
withstanding heavy drops of rain under big trees.
(4) Dichondr repens - This grass is exactly like "Brahmi" (Centilla Asiatica). This grass
forms a special type of cover on the ground. Its leaves are small, round and
dark green in colour. It can be easily grown both in high sunlight and shade.

(5) Poa pratensis -
It is called "Kentucky Blue" because this grass is blue-green in
colour. This grass prefers cold climate. It needs a lot of organic manure and
less water. This grass does not stay well for long.
(6) Fescue grass -
This is the most subtle and beautiful grass among all the grasses used in
lawns. This grass is bright green in colour. This grass germinates and grows
very fast. Therefore, it requires more water, cutting and manure.
(7) Paspmalum
distichum - This grass grows on saline soil. It is suitable for. Therefore it
is mostly planted in coastal areas.
(8) Pennisetum
clandestonii - This grass is recommended to be planted in acidic soils of hilly

Planting of Grass - Lawn grass is planted by the following methods -
(1) By seeds - This method is used in those areas where
grass is not available for sowing. 12 to 15 kg of seeds are sufficient for one
hectare area. Generally, 500 grams of seeds are required for 200 square meter
area. The best time for sowing seeds is considered to be the beginning of the
rainy season. Sufficient moisture in the soil is very important in this method.
The seeds should be sprinkled evenly on a level ground and mixed well with the
soil up to a depth of 4 cm. Tests have shown that if 10 quintals of leaf mold
is added before sowing, then germination is very good. This will maintain
moisture in the soil and the seeds will germinate easily. The seeds germinate
in 10 to 20 days. When the grass grows to 4 to 5 cm height, it is cut and then
roller is used.
It takes more time to prepare greenery (lawn) through
seeds and the infestation of weeds is also more.
2) Pasting of grass pieces - In this method, the stems of
grass are cut into pieces of 5-6 cm length along with the roots. Pulp is
prepared by mixing two parts of grass pieces, one part cow dung manure, one
part fresh cow dung and one part sand. This prepared pulp is spread evenly on
the flat surface of the ground in such a way that no place remains empty. Light
irrigation is done to make it moist.
(3) Planting strips of grass - This is an excellent
method for creating greenery (lawn) in hot regions. In this, small green grass
should be selected from a dense and weed-free place. It is taken out in the
form of strips. These strips are laid on the prepared flat ground and water is
given by running a roller. By doing this, the grass gets established quickly.
In 3 months the grass becomes ready for cutting by machine.

matured and small branched grass should be used. In this method, the grass is
taken out with the help of a hoe along with its roots and planted in small
bunches by making holes at a distance of 5 to 5 cm on the level ground. After
planting the grass, it should be pressed well from all sides and then irrigated
by running a roller. After this, irrigation should be done according to the
type of soil and environment. After about 30 to 40 days, the roots of the grass
start growing. After about two months, greenery (lawn) starts appearing. After
that, pruning should be done.
